Purse Career Advancement Opportunities

canstockphoto48806985Imagine choosing a job not on money or even on career advancement, but as part of a life worth living.

Dale Dauten

How do you define career advancement?

Do you want to influence more people?

Do you want to help more people achieve their goals?

Do you want to make a larger impact?

Do you want to achieve a higher position in your company?

Do you want to start your own company??

If you’re the kind of person who dreams about evolving and advancing in your career, then you might want to read this.

Career advancement is defined differently by different people. Other people’s idea of career advancement isn’t really important.

Your definition of career advancement is what is important. Lewis Carroll said, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.”

Identify your own definition.

That will be your true north.

Here are some questions that might guide you:

  • Who do you want to work with?
  • Where do you want to work at?
  • What hours do you want to work?
  • What is your dream career?
  • What do you hope to be doing in the next year? Five years? Ten years?
  • What do you need to do now in order to get to where you want to be?

It is vital that you know where you’re going.

Earl Nightingale defined success, in his article, The Strangest Secret in the World, as “the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.” Nightingale gave three examples of this, including:

  • The school teacher who is teaching because that’s what she wants to do;
  • The entrepreneur who starts her own company because that was her dream and that’s what she wanted to do
  • The salesperson who wants to become the best salesperson in her company and sets forth on the pursuit of this goal.

Thomas Merton illustrates this concept best with his quote: “People may spend their whole lives climbing the ladder of success only to find, once they reach the top, that the ladder is learning against the wrong wall.” Life is too short. You’ll want to make the best use of your time and go for what you really want in life.

I knew a mental health therapist who was simply a metal health therapist at heart. She had the opportunity to advance and become a program director for several acute-care units at a psychiatric hospital. She did it for a while, but found herself missing her true calling, which is being a therapist. She gave up the supervisor position (managing the team) to do what she wanted to do, which was be a practitioner. That was her idea of success. She is living it.

Are you pursing your idea of success?

Double Your Productivity

canstockphoto13236809A work-only zone does wonders for your productivity. So, I prefer working at the office now. I spend 8 focused hours there, then I go home to be present with my family.

Derek Sivers

Do you want to be more productive? Get twice as much done per day?

How would your professional life be if you could double your productivity?

How would your personal life be if you could double your productivity?

I’d imagine you’d be getting a lot of stuff completed!

I’ll validate that you’re a busy, hard-working person. You do a lot of things.   Your time is limited. You manage both work and home life. It’s not your fault that you’re bombarded with so much stuff in life.

There was a time when I was super busy with my life. I was burning the candle at both ends. I felt totally overwhelmed. Why? Because I didn’t know any better.

I’ve studied and learned a few secrets of being productive over time. Some of the solutions came to me by pure luck, chance and serendipity. I learned other techniques from taking responsibility for my own education in life.

One way to increase productivity is being “focused.” This means paying 100% attention to one thing at a time. Multi-tasking isn’t the solution. Think of a person who is driving a car and texting. It is dangerous. Your work is better quality when you do it fully-focused, one-thing at a time. There isn’t a need to go back and re-do the mistakes from multi-tasking.

A second way to be more productive is exactly what we, recreation therapists teach: rejuvenating your body. It is cliché to say that all work and no play makes Jill a dull girl. However, it is very true. One way to re-energize is to take care your body, including: emotional wellness, physical body, and mental health. If you’re too tired, drained, and worn-out then you’re not going to be productive.

Continuing your education takes focus. The process of taking an advanced (self-study) certificate course will require you to be productive. You’ll have to read books, watch videos, and participate in a community discussion. Completing an advanced certificate course demonstrates to your colleagues, supervisors, and allied co-workers that you are productive. It shows you’re a super-star.

What else happens when you take a course? You learn things. You’ll discover insights on what is effective. You’ll have specialized knowledge that will make you fruitful. You won’t have to search online for a resource or ask people for suggestions. A person who has completed advanced courses has gained the knowledge and skills about their specialty area. They can go right to work in that focus area. That saves time and money.

Become a Distinguished Professional?

canstockphoto16489029

It’s easy to love yourself, when you feel good enough, when you feel special enough, when you’re loved enough, when you have enough money, and you’re appreciated.

Debbie Ford

Do you want to be a distinguished professional? Do you want people to respect you and recreation therapy? Do you want to be a professional recreation therapist that is set apart from the average recreation therapist?

Have you ever heard recreation therapists complain that they are not acknowledged and recognized? I’ve seen these complaints in online group discussions. One recreation therapist said she is the “babysitter” for the patients. Another recreation therapist said she is “break-relief staff,” so the real professionals can take a break when she comes to provide her services. Another recreation therapist said that all he does it take patients to the cafeteria for lunch.

It isn’t your fault if you’re not recognized by “the others” for your efforts. Radical acceptance: you’re not able to change anyone else’s thoughts and opinions of you and the overall recreation therapy profession. You can’t make them love you or admire you or appreciate you.

However, there are techniques that can increase respect and recognition.

.

I was once young and dumb before I became older and wiser. I truly thought I knew it all when I was a teenager and then again as a young adult with my undergraduate degree. I have a greater span of knowledge and life experiences compared to my teenage years. And now (as I’m approaching 40), I recognize that I still have so much more to learn and grow.

It is a little difficult for a new greenhorn to be distinguished because it takes time for a small acorn to grown into a giant oak tree. There is a funny sign at Stewart’s Original Hotdogs here in Huntington, West Virginia that says, “You’ll be amazed at our smart staff. We only hire teenagers while they still know it all.” Of course, there is fun humor in the sign. The truth is that there isn’t any human being who knows everything.

There are ways a recreation therapist (at any age) can start becoming distinguished.

  • Gain more knowledge and experience.
  • Provide services that bring about greater outcomes.
  • Have a wall full of credentials: licenses, certifications, and specializations.

Be patient. Enjoy the process (and the journey) of life and learning. You’ll eventually get to the destination you’re searching for if you’re determined and persistent.

Do you want to be happier? Read This.

Hey there — canstockphoto17885257
Do you want to be happier?
Does your work (as a recreation therapist) require you to help people (like patients/ clients) to feel to feel happier?
Do you want to know the secrets to happiness?
Check this out…

Modern scientists have studied happiness (since the 90s).
They’re called – “positive psychologists.”
Positive Psychology is one of the most popular courses at Harvard.
Thousands of students attend the course weekly.
This branch of psychology is exploding and will continue to do so.
I feel that those of us in rec therapy are applied positive psychologists.
I think it is vital that recreational therapists have some basic knowledge of the principles related to positive psychology.
Go here to register for the advanced certificate course in positive psychology that I’ve created for you:
Did you know…
There are many experiences and activities that increase Dopamine in the body.
This is a neurotransmitter associated with feeling good.
I regret to say that dopamine starts to decrease in people during their teenage years.
If it decreases too much and too fast a person will have Parkison’s Disease.
However, in general, there are some natural activities that can help increase happiness!
The “activities” or path to happiness is different for different people.
Here are some:
  • Physical activity: especially unique activities like surfing
  • Strong connections, including quality time with family and/ or friends
  • Strong social support network
  • Loving-kindness – doing good and helping others
  • A sense of gratitude and appreciate for things in life
  • Play and having fun in life (at any age)
  • Participating in meaningful activities (which could be the work one does) or community service
  • Having new experiences
Doesn’t all of that sound like a Recreation Therapy interventions to help a person who is suffering?
I think so!
Wouldn’t it be nice to show support and evidence that the “activities” you’re providing for patients are interventions with evidenced-based research that demonstrates they bring about outcomes associated with improving healthier living styles, better physical health and wellness, as well as improved mood and affect?
I think so too!
My embarrassing and painful disclosure:
I’ve suffered from generalized anxiety and depression since I was a child. Except, as a child, I didn’t have the worlds to explain my emotions. Of course, as a disclaimer: I’ve seen a psychiatrist for medication and have spoken to a counselor during my college years.
Today, I’m very happy to have discovered the power of positive psychology (which are applied recreation therapy interventions). I not only use this stuff in my own life, I also teach it to the children and teens who I provide services for. Okay – you can laugh aloud that that because it sounded like hair club for men where the guy says I’m not only the president, but I’m a client member too. or something like that.
But the truth is:
The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) reports that anxiety is the most common mental health issue in Americans.
Next question: Do you want to learn more about positive psychology?
I hope so.

Develop Your Potential

canstockphoto18669463When you catch a glimpse of your potential, that’s when passion is born.

Zig Ziglar

Do you want to develop your full potential?

Do you want to push yourself to go beyond where you’re at now?

Do you want to live a life worth living?

You might want to check this out.

Some scientists and researchers ask people on their deathbeds about life. People on their deathbeds don’t regret the things they done in life. They most often share that they regret the things they didn’t do.

Life is short. An average American lives to around 80.  This number varies depending on location too. The first part of life is childhood. Then there is this giant part of life where a person works (typically starting in teenage years or early 20s and working until retirement at 65). Some people work longer. That only leaves a few short years after retirement until life ends.

You’ll be working a lot of those years in the middle. Are you living them to your fullest? Would you like some free tips on developing your potential?

WikiHow suggests four easy-steps for developing potential. Here is my summary of those four concepts:

  • Keep a childlike interest in the world. Children are naturally curious people. They want to learn and discover things. Don’t hold back. Get out there and continue to learn and explore the world.
  • Focus on your own skills, interests, and abilities. Continue to do so even when others attempt to make you feel inferior. Who knows why other people do that. Maybe they’re jealous.
  • Accept that you’ll make a few mistakes along the path. I make them too. Mistakes are evidence that you’re trying. A person who never made any mistakes probably never tried anything either. Here are a few tips:
    1. Put in effort
    2. Be patient and keep on going
    3. Be determined to make it
    4. Learn from your mistakes so you can advance
    5. Be confident
    6. Be realistic too.
  • What do you really want to accomplish in life? How realistically are you able to do so? Now is the best time to start.

Demonstrate Your Professional Commitment

canstockphoto22452661

Take 100% responsibility for your life.

– Jack Canfield

Do you want to be more successful?

Are you taking 100% responsibility for our own life and choices?

Are you taking responsibility for everything?

People who demonstrate professional commitment take 100% responsibility for their own lives. They don’t blame other people or make excuse for where they are in life. They are where they are because of their own actions. The most successful people don’t sit idle hoping and wishing. They take the most effective actions to get to where they want to be in life.

You might want to check out this formula for responsibility:

My mentor and trainer, Jack Canfield teaches the E+R=O formula. It means Event + Response = Outcome.

Start with the outcome you want to achieve? What do you hope to accomplish?

We can all determine the best possible outcome we want to achieve.

Let’s pretend our desired outcome is:

to enjoy today.

Several events happen, including:

  • It rains and you were planning to enjoy the outdoors.
  • your friend doesn’t call you, and
  • A stranger on the street says something insulting to you.

Are you still able to enjoy the day? Some people would say “nope, not now, this day is over. It’s ruined,” but the truth is… it is still possible to enjoy your day.

Events happen all the time. They are out of our control. We can’t change the weather, or make a person call us, or control what another person said or thinks. Marshal Linehan teaches a concept called “Radical Acceptance” in her Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). It means to accept the reality of the situation to avoid prolonged suffering. You don’t have to “like” or “love” the event. You just accept the event as it is so you can feel better about it.

Have you ever seen a person fall down, get mad, and yell at gravity? Laugh aloud. Probably not. Why don’t people complain about gravity? Radical acceptance. It can’t be changed. It just is.

Change what you do have power to change, which is your responses.

An instant reaction could be, “it’s true, my day is over,” and the result would be a bad day. However, people like you (and me) have the unique power to change our response.

We can choose to:

  • Think an attitude of gratitude about the rain. Some places are in droughts. Enjoy it the rain. Embrace the rain. Play in the rain.
  • We can choose to call our friend to see why she hasn’t called yet.
  • We can choose to have empathy and concern for the person calling us names knowing they must have something terribly wrong going on in their life right now that is making them so miserable.

Better responses = better outcomes

By choosing these responsible responses, we can take control over the outcomes.

The real event: other people (co-workers, supervisors, administration) may not appreciate you and recreation therapy as much as you do. Radical acceptance.

The real responsibility for you, your life, and your professional commitment is only in your hands. It is your responsibility. Only you can choose to make you, your life, and your profession great. You choose to advocate for what you do. You choose to learn everything you can in life. You’re the one who chooses your path.  You choose to make things happen.

The real results: your commitment and action will make things happen. And as the famous Dr. Seuss said, “Out there things can happen, and frequently do to people as brainy and footsy as you.”

Smokey Bear says, “Only you can prevent forest fires!” Smokey is talking about responsibility. My favorite motivational speaker, the late Jim Rohn often said, “You can’t hire someone to do your push-ups for you.” I’ll say, “Only YOU can demonstrate your own professional commitment to your own career and profession.

Do You Really Want to  Demonstrate Your Professional Commitment?

Solution: take our advanced specialty course.

Who this course is for:

It is designed for people with the CTRS credential who are seeking advanced specialty certification in behavioral health. NCTRC requires the CTRS to have at least three advanced certificates in behavioral health (along with other requirements) to gain the advanced specialty certification. (Disclaimer: always contact NCTRC for official information).

Who these advanced certificate courses are NOT for:

People who are not really motivated in learning more

People who already have a Master’s degree in recreation therapy (or possibly a related field) because a person with a Master’s degree can select another path to certification without gaining the three advanced specialty certificates.

Follow Your Dreams and Passions

canstockphoto21868200The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

Eleanor Roosevelt

Do you enjoy helping other people?

Are you still passionate about your profession, recreation therapy?

Do you dream of advancing your professional abilities and responsibilities?

Do you hope to do more with your limited time that you’re here on Earth?

Dreams and passions for success in your career (and life) are wonderful. However, they’re just wishes and dreams if you don’t take action. Maybe you’ve heard of the slogan, “First a Dream, then an Act, and then the Dream becomes a Fact.”

You might want to check this out about making dreams come true:

Writing down your goals increases the likelihood that you’ll achieve them. Real successful people write their goals. Do you have written goals?

  • Gail Matthews is a professor in psychology at Dominica University (California). His research shows that people who write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them.
  • Success guru, Jack Canfield, studied successful people over his lifetime and put together a book of his research, titled, The Success Principles. One of the core skills he discovered was that successful people have written goals. Canfield teaches students to create a list of 100 life goals.

Have you ever felt like an average Recreation Therapist? The good news is the majority of us are average (in the middle of the bell curve).  There are only a few outliers who are the rare, above-average recreation therapists. It isn’t your fault if you’re not a top achiever in the profession. I validate that you’re doing the best you can already with the knowledge and skills you already have. I’d argue that you’re probably a person who is already just a bit over the tip of average. And yet, do you have dreams and passions to do more than what you’ve accomplished already?

Some people feel humiliated by being mediocre or average. I can slightly relate. I graduated in the middle part of my high school class (about 148 out of 307 students). People like me are important because we made the people at the top part of the class possible. You can feel free to laugh at the comment.

On a real note: I wasn’t the smartest kid in our class. I couldn’t get fully admitted to college with my scores. My test scores were so low that I had to take a semester (12 credit hours) worth of remedial classes like English 099, English 100, Math 99, and Math 100 as prerequisites to prove I could handle college. Those 12 hours didn’t even count towards my undergraduate degree.

Do you want to know my secret? I had dreams and passions for becoming a Recreation Therapist with the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential. I created a motivational “Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist” flyer that I kept on a small board in my college dorm by my computer. I imagined it as if it were already real. It was the fuel that kept me going. I completed my undergraduate degree in four years (despite getting a slow start) because I had dreams and passions with a specific pan. I took summer classes all four years too.

Give goal-writing a chance.

Write down some goals in your personal journal or notebook.

Post them as a screensaver on your computer.

Here is an example:

  • Sample Dream: Become an advanced practitioner.
    • Sample Goal: I will enroll in at least one advanced specialty certificate course and complete it before midnight on the last day of this month.

Do you want to continue to follow your dreams and passions?

Do you want to become the best recreation therapist you can be?

Solution: take an advanced specialty course.

On Specialty Knowledge

canstockphoto11750258Successful people, in all callings, never stop acquiring specialized knowledge related to their major purpose, business, or profession. – Napoleon Hill
