The therapeutic value of hugging

Research shows that hugging releases endorphins, lowers blood pressure, lowers cortisol (stress hormones), improves sleep, and increases social connectedness. How amazing!?

I can vaguely recall that a country (possible Germany around World War II had any many woman to have babies and then give them over to the state. The babes were kept along in cribs without social interaction. If I recall right, their aim was to build soldiers out of these kids. However, most of them died due to the lack of social interaction and human contact. We humans are social animals. Those who did survive ended up having delays in areas of their life. Disclaimer: I don’t have a source for this.

Some of my tips: ask first. Respect boundaries. I [Danny Pettry] provide services for children with abuse-reactive needs. They often have poor boundaries and need to be taught boundaries because they haven’t learned. As a rule for people in the helping field (like recreational therapists) hugging patients is often an ethical no-no. However, sometimes it might be appropriate (in example: rec therapist giving hug to resident in nursing home on her birthday who lacks a family). At our facility, we provide side-hugs for children and teens if they ask for it. The reason for hugging on the side opposed to front is due to the kids past experience with abuse and to avoid having any body parts pressing against a person.

My mentor Jack Canfield argues to lean in to the right when you hug a person so both hearts can be together as one.

I must admit I am very akward about hugging and touching. I did participate in hugging exercises during a breakthrough to success training with Jack Canfield.

Stress and the heart

Jacqeline Howard (CNN) had written an article titled:

This might be how stress and heart attacks are linked. 

CDC symptoms that are warning: irritable, fear, nightmares, powerless.

The ways she suggested for cutting down on stress were often recreation in nature, among her other suggestions.

  • Fun,
  • laughter,
  • get out with friends,
  • exercise,
  • talk to someone,
  • eat healthy,
  • keep mind active.

What Do Rec. Therapists And Coloring Books Have In Common?

You’ve probably already guessed the answer – Stress Relief!

Recent studies have shown that 20 minutes of coloring has the same physiological effect as a 20 minute meditation session. How cool is that?!

Coloring has been used by progressive mental health practitioners since back in the 1970’s, for relieving anxiety. Just like meditation, coloring allows our brains to turn away from other thoughts, and focus only on the moment, helping to alleviate anxiety and reduce stress. Coloring is an easy and inexpensive way to bring “mindfulness” into your life (and your clients’). Some studies have even shown that activities like coloring can help improve cognition, and who doesn’t want that?

Today, my friend Dianna Mullane and I are launching our fabulous, stress relieving adult coloring book, “A Coloring Book For Women – 30 Divine Designs.” We have just completed this project of love and it’s getting rave reviews already.

Competent employees are given more work duties (and they are stressed about it)

There was an interesting article by Bouree Lam in The Atlantic (based on research) (2015, May 22) that indicates that competent people are assigned more work duties.  Bourbee points that that it often causes additional stress on the high-performing employee. Bourbee points that that that the competent person is not always rewarded financially for those efforts and argues that mangers should compensate their high-performing employees.

Danny Pettry thoughts: I argue that the high performing employee very well “IS” being compensated more (over the long-run). The economy goes up and down. Sometimes employees are let go. I imagine those drivers (hard-workers) are going to be the ones that will turn out on top (keeping jobs and salary) and probably more apt to be the ones who will obtain new jobs (salary again) if they had to be let go or if the company closed. These drivers obtain the knew jobs because they have already built a Brand Name for themselves as in “Jennifer” is already well-known as being a hard-working, competent, person who gets results. In conclusion: it is stressful. Do the work. Make a great impact on the world. One day when you look back, you’ll more apt be satisfied with what you’ve done. Deal with the stress of being assigned more.

Continuing your education and continue building your skills. The knowledge and skills you have today may be okay. However, the world is always changing. Go ahead and learn more to be prepared.

Danny Pettry: My tip for Recreational Therapy mangers: compensate more if you have the power to do so. I’d also like to point out that a lot of research based indicates that pay (extrinsic rewards)  for performance is not always the most effective. Intrinsic motivation is the real key to results. Read Daniel Pink’s Drive or Decie and Flaste’s why we do what we do. Rec Therapy mangers could give small tokens of appreciation: a pizza party, a small gift card from amazon, or other creative things.
